Becoming Successful

The rules of rulemaking

Our society thrives on rules. There are rules for everything. From the size of a door or window in your home, to what you should do when you switch your job, there are rules in every aspect of your life. And people are expected to abide to these rules.

But if you are an entrepreneur or a manager of a department, or even running a household, you are faced with a different aspect of rules: rulemaking. There are certain dos and don’ts about rulemaking, the rules of rulemaking. Abide to these rules and you’ll notice that you are creating success. Break them, and you will end up with chaos!

Reap what you sow

The first thing that you must understand is that you cannot reap the rewards if you do not sow. One cannot expect success without putting effort into creating that success. Nurturing the little seed of success until it is a full-grown tree. This is true for success, for riches, for happiness and everything else in life. Nothing is free in life, but if you put in the effort, you will see great results.

But you will have to plant the right seeds. You can’t just go sow any seed and expect to end up with an apple tree. You might just end up with lemons instead… Reap what you sow!

Rule of attraction

This is another way of saying you will reap what you sow. But the rule of attraction starts from the sowing aspect, instead of the reaping aspect of this phenomenon. It says that in order to receive something, you must give that same thing. It is the be-do-have principle. If you want to have people be nice to you, don’t go shouting at them. Be nice to them!

The Rule of Rulemaking: NO Exceptions!

Now that you understand that you reap what you sow and how the rule of attraction works, here’s the big rule. NO EXCEPTIONS. This might sound very straightforward, but trust me, I see this around me every single day. The next line is probably the single most important line you must know when it comes to rulemaking:

Most people make rules for others and exceptions for themselves

Think about this for a while, I am sure you can name an instance of this that you have seen today. Even if you have just arrived at work, you might have see a police officer go through a red light, your boss might be late while he expects you to be in at 8:30, the list goes on.

If you ever need to make a set of rules, make sure you abide to them yourself. And if you break a rule, you must be ready to explain your actions and, of course, you are then obliged to accept that exact same excuse from anyone in the future.

So when it comes to rulemaking, make sure you NEVER make an exception for yourself. Others will either do the same (you reap the sour fruits that you have sowed) or they will resent you for making exceptions for yourself but expecting them to abide the rules.
